INSTALLATION on Windows 98 - NOTE: IFTF is no longer supported for Windows 98

Installation is not as straightforward as Windows 2000 or XP. Follow these steps and use the recommended solutions to correct error messages.

Additional steps that may be required.

  1. Install the latest updates for Windows 98.
  2. Install the latest service pack for Jet 4.0.
  3. The version of Internet Explorer (IE) must be version 5.01 or later

Remedies for errors

Setup.exe gives an error message about shlwapi.dll. - Install a later version of shlwapii.dll. Since Windows uses this file, the newer version of shlwapi.dll must be copied to the Windows system directory by starting Windows in DOS mode. Warning: - Although newer versions of shlwapi.dll are backward compatible, one should take steps to be able to go back to the original version of this file, if needed.

Loading IFTF gives an error message "report load failed". - Manually register CRQE.dll. To do this, go to the windows system directory. Then open a command prompt (go to start, run, type command). Then type regsvr32 "C:\program files\common files\Crystal Decisions\1.0\bin\CRQE.dll"

Trying to manually register CRQE.dll fails. - Replace the version of the file atl.dll with a newer version (in the Windows system directory). Repeat the manual registration of CRQE.dll. The correct version of atl.dll is 3.0.8449. Do not use a later, unicode version.

If the above steps don't work, get the file dbghelp.dll from http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/ddk/debugging (also available in later versions of Windows operating systems) and put in the Windows/System directory. The program may now run in spite of the manual registration failure of CRQE.dll.
